Young Minds Great Start Montessori will be opening this fall and offers Tilbury parents an opportunity to let their toddlers and pre-schoolers take advantage of the Montessori philosophy that could make their subsequent years in school more productive. Opened by Jessica Beselaere McCracken, the school will have openings for three infants, ten toddlers and sixteen pre-schoolers.
Jessica is a Tilbury native, the daughter of Kim and Heather Beselaere, and earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree with Honours in Sociology and Marketing Management from the University of Guelph. She went on to Oakland University in Michigan where she earned a Post Graduate Degree in Montessori Education. From there she worked for three years at the Chatham Montessori School before deciding to open her own school in Tilbury. She admits that the birth of her first child last year is a major factor in determining what she was going to do for the next few years.
The Montessori philosophy of teaching was developed about one hundred years ago by an Italian doctor named Maria Montessori. Her method is based upon a child’s natural development and basic desire to explore, discover, and learn from the world around them. The Montessori method instills the basic skills a child needs to go on learning fro the rest of his or her life. It nurtures the creative aspect of learning and discovery so that the child may grow into an adult with the skills to meet life’s problems with confidence and assurance.
While all schools teach the basic three R’s, a Montessori school adds to that by teaching children to be kind and courteous to others, how to prepare a snack and clan up afterwards, and other lifeskills that they can build on as they grow and mature.
A Montessori classroom is not like traditional classrooms. All equipment is shelved low to the ground so the children can have easy access. The children learn at their won pace, with activities and games geared for self teaching. A teacher is there only to help the child move on to the next activity, once she sees that they have successfully done the previous one.
Young Minds Great Start Montessori offers three programs, each for a specific age group. The Infant program, for ages 3 -18 months, will be taught by one teacher. The Toddler class is open to children 18 months to 2.5 years old and has room for ten children. Two teachers will work here. The Pre-school class, for children aged 2.5 to 6 years old will hold 16children, led by two teachers.
The cost of sending your child to the Young Minds Great Start Montessori runs between $27 and $31 per day. Infants are $31, toddlers $29 and pre-schoolers $27. Classes run from 8:30am to 4:30pm, with before and after hours care available for working families. The school is located at 32 Canal St. East and McCracken says they will be holding an open house during the summer for parents who want to check out the facilities and programs. She also said there are opening for a few more positions on the staff.
